So, there I was, dancing my heart out at a friend's wedding, when suddenly, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" rang out from the speakers. I mean, who doesn't bust out their best Patrick Swayze impression when that line drops, right? It got me thinking, how old were those characters in Dirty Dancing, anyway? You know, because age is just a number, but it's also kind of a big deal in this movie.

Baby: The Girl Next Door

Let's start with our leading lady, Frances "Baby" Houseman. When we first meet her, she's a sweet, innocent 17-year-old, spending her summer at Kellerman's resort with her family. Now, I don't know about you, but when I was 17, I was more worried about my prom dress than my dance moves. But then again, I wasn't dancing with Johnny Castle.

By the time the movie ends, Baby's all grown up, ready to take on the world with her newfound confidence and a scholarship to study in Europe. She's still just 18, but she's lightyears ahead of where I was at that age. I mean, I was still trying to figure out how to use a curling iron without setting my hair on fire.

Johnny: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Now, onto our dreamy dance instructor, Johnny Castle. When we first see him, he's a 24-year-old bad boy with a heart of gold, teaching dance lessons and having secret flings with rich resort guests. I mean, who among us hasn't had a secret fling with a much older, much more experienced person? Oh, wait... just Johnny?

By the end of the movie, Johnny's learned a thing or two about responsibility and commitment. He's still 24, but he's grown up a lot. He's ready to leave his dancing days behind and start a real life with Baby. I mean, who needs a career when you can have Baby Houseman, right?

The Rest of the Gang

Let's not forget about the rest of the gang. Penny, Johnny's dance partner and best friend, is 21 when we meet her. She's wise beyond her years, dealing with an unplanned pregnancy and a secret abortion. I mean, can you even imagine having to deal with that at 21? I was still trying to figure out how to do my laundry.

And then there's Neil, Baby's older sister's fiancé. He's a 27-year-old Wall Street type, all stuffy and serious. He's supposed to be the grown-up in the relationship, but he's the one who ends up looking like a fool. I mean, who needs a stuffy Wall Street guy when you can have Patrick Swayze?

So, What's the Point?

You know, as I was dancing my way through that wedding reception, I realized that age is just a number in Dirty Dancing. Baby and Johnny might have been young, but they were old enough to know what they wanted and to fight for it. And isn't that what really matters?

So, the next time you find yourself busting out your best "Time of My Life" dance moves, remember Baby and Johnny. They might have been young, but they were old enough to know that nobody puts Baby in a corner. And neither should you. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some dancing to do.
